Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located in the Xipiaoluo area 16 km to the northwest of the Ninglang County, Yunnan Province. It was named by the 4th Team under the Yunnan Regional Geological Reconnaissance Party in 1980.


Lithology and Thickness

Volcanics. Composed of volcanic breccia and basalt, intercalated with lenticular limestone, and with a thickness of 316.3 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Effusive unconformable contact with the limestone of the underlying Funing Fm (or Maokou Fm equivalent)

Upper contact

Tends to represent continuous effusive deposits with the basalt and being intercalated with basaltic volcanic breccia of the overlying Yangjiaping Fm.

Regional extent

Distributed in the Yongsheng area of the Ninglang County, Yunnan Province.

Fossils

The limestone lenses yield such Fusulinids as Metadoliolina sp., Afghanella sp., Neoschwagerina sp., and corals represented by Verbeekiella sp., etc.


Age 

This formation and the Yangjiaping Fm should be the westward extension of the basalt of the Emeishan Basalt Fm => end of Lengwu’an Stage of the Yangsingian Epoch = latest Capitanian Stage (late Guadalupian Epoch; late-Middle Permian). Assigned same combined age Emeishan Basalt Fm in Sichuan.
